A Canterbury volunteer firefighter has been stood down over allegations he defaced his uniform.
The Fire Service has confirmed it is looking at whether the Leeston-based fireman removed the words "Whakaratonga Iwi" from his uniform.
The words mean service to people.
Fire Region Commander Rob Saunders said it was an employment issue, which the Fire Service was investigating.
"If this is the case, this is a very isolated incident. The New Zealand Fire Service is committed to being representative of all areas of our community and we very much value the input of all ethnic groups," he said.
Mr Saunders said defacing a crest could have legal ramifications and the matter could be referred to the police if proof was found.
