A property in Hacker St, Masterton, was cordoned off yesterday after a 51-year-old-man locked himself inside a house that contained several firearms.
Senior Sergeant Scott Miller said the man's family alerted police at 11.45am as they were concerned for the man's safety.
"He made a number of phone calls to family members and police became concerned for his safety as there was a number of firearms in the house and police did not know what his access to those firearms was."
The Armed Offenders Squad was notified but was stood down once police negotiators made phone contact with the man, Mr Miller said.
At 2pm the man ran out of the house towards a neighbour's house and was tackled by police.
