Fire service battles Hawera blaze

Firefighters were called to a large blaze at an empty house in Hawera early today.

Four appliances were sent to the Victoria St address at 12.50am.

Fire Communications shift manager Belinda Beets said the fire was well involved by the time they arrived, with flames visible from some distance.

A fire safety officer was to investigate the cause later today.
