Fire crews were called to the Auckland suburb of Mt Wellington today after a patch of grass caught fire.
A photo taken from Stonefields development showed smoke billowing across the suburb.
A witness first spotted the fire from Stonefields just before midday, but said it was put out by the fire service "pretty quickly".
Strong wind was blowing it away from the direction of his home.
A fire service spokesman said two fire engines were called to the mountain at 11.37am.
