Thursday's fire at Newmarket in Auckland is not believed to have been suspicious. The blaze, which started at 5pm at a Khyber Pass building containing an adult store, a restaurant and a beauty therapy business, drew hundreds of onlookers as it billowed black smoke. Seventeen fire appliances and a police helicopter were at the scene.
One firefighter received an electric shock, and another was taken to hospital with a suspected hand tendon cut.
