Fire investigators will be back on the scene of a significant fire in West Auckland this morning.

The blaze on Great North Rd near Henry St in Avondale took hold around 8.15pm, the Fire Service said.

Six fire trucks were called to the fire at a two-level commercial building, with a cafe and retail shop, and an apartment.

It is believed the fire originated in the flat.

No-one was injured in the blaze, Jaron Philips from the Fire Service northern communications centre said. But there were initial concerns that someone was inside the flat at the time the fire took hold.

"A by-stander was concerned thinking there were people in a rear flat, but that was early on," he said.

Firefighters searched the property and "everyone was accounted for".

Specialist fire investigators would return to the scene again this morning to continue their examinations into the cause of the fire.
