Fire in Waitomo Caves gift shop

A giftshop at the Waitomo Caves was gutted in a fire early today.

The Fire Service said it was alerted at about 2.40am to the blaze in the 15m by 30m building at the entrance to the caves, about 20km northwest of Te Kuiti.

About 7am today two pumps from Otorohanga and one from Te Kuiti were still at the scene checking for hotspots. Fire safety officers were also investigating.
