KEY POINTS:
Fire crews are dampening down a fire which started in the basement of the Hamilton City Council.
A Northern Fire Communications spokesman told NZPA the Hamilton Fire Service was alerted about 4.26pm to a fire in the basement of the eight-storey building.
Up to seven crews attended the fire, which has been contained and crews were dampening the basement down, he said.
The fire was thought to have started in a switchboard in the basement.
Several floors of the building were smoked-logged and appliances were attempting to air the building, he said.
The building was evacuated and no-one was believed to have been injured.
