A fire has gutted an historic three-storey building in Ashburton this morning.
Firefighters had managed to contain the blaze at the Canterbury Flour Mill building in Ashburton, in Mid-Canterbury, but Fire Service spokesman Kevin Donaldson said it would be another few hours before the fire was completely out.
The building, built in 1872, caught fire just before 7am. It was gutted, the roof had collapsed and there were signs of structural damage in the brickwork, Mr Donaldson said.
Several fire crews and an aerial appliance were still working to put out pockets of fire in hard-to-reach parts. A turntable ladder truck had been brought in from Timaru.
There were no reports of injuries.
