Firefighters in the Far North lost their truck to the fire they were battling yesterday.
Fire Service spokesman Steve Smith said three helicopters and six fire trucks were called to a fire at a pine plantation about 15km north of Ahipara about 3pm. He said one of the fire trucks must have run out of diesel and had to be abandoned.
Meanwhile, rural fire services in the Moerewa area were battling a scrub fire covering about 50ha. The fire started some time around 6pm last night.
