Two houses went up in flames and another was under threat as a scrub fire raged in the Far North.
Properties on the remote Karikari Peninsula had earlier been evacuated as strong easterly winds drove the flames towards them.
Six fire appliances and two helicopters were sent to the scene. One News reported that five people had to be rescued from the water in fear of their lives and were rescued by boat at a beach.
