Fire destroys food warehouse

A huge fire has destroyed a Foodstuffs warehouse in Auckland overnight.

More than 20 appliances were called in to deal with the blaze at Davis Trading's premises in Carbine Road, in Mt Wellington.

Equipment was also driven up from Hamilton to help fight the blaze.

Shift manager Steve Smith said the alarm was raised late last night with a flurry of callers reporting smoke and flames.

The firefighting operation has been winding down this morning, and fire safety teams will be on the site for much of today looking for the cause of the blaze.
