Fire fighters tonight saved a huge circus-type tent near Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland from destruction.
But Jaron Phillips, shift manager at the Fire Service's Auckland communications centre said he'd been told about 50 square metres of the Super Top tent, made of PVC, had been burnt out.
The tent is used for events and concerts including Big Day Out.
The blaze began among rolls of PVC under the stage area, creating flames and dense smoke.
Firefighters had to use breathing apparatus to tackle the seat of the fire.
Mr Phillips said he did not know if anyone had been in the tent when the fire started but the area was evacuated and there had been no injuries.
The Fire Service responded to the alarm with 14 appliances because of the risk the fire posed to nearby buildings and parked vehicles.
The blaze was out late tonight with a police scene guard on duty overnight.
Fire investigators would be on the scene early tomorrow.
The stadium in Penrose is the home of the NZ Warriors and seats up to 30,000 for a sports game.
