Nearly 30 firefighters battled a blaze in a sports complex in south Auckland early today.
The fire at the Counties-Manukau Sports Foundation in Weymouth on the eastern side of Manukau Harbour closed Weymouth Rd for at least two hours as firefighters tried to get to at the seat of the fire in the roof space.
Firefighters received their first call about 4.40am and by the time the first fire appliance arrived it was burning fiercely and a second alarm was transmitted, Fire Service shift manager Megan Ruru said.
The fire was under control within two hours and within another hour all but two of the fire appliances had left.
