Four fire crews that attempted to rescue a horse stuck in a gully in Puhoi, north of Auckland, have been stood down.
Fire communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson said crews from Silverdale and Puhoi were at the scene at Krippner Rd in Puhoi earlier this evening attempting to rescue the horse, which had been trapped in the gully all day.
A member of the public called emergency services at 5.33pm, he said.
After fire crews were unable to rescue the horse, a vet had been called in, he said.
He was not certain whether the horse had been put down.
