Sixteen fire appliances have contained multiple fires which broke out in Christchurch's Port Hills overnight.
This morning firefighters who remained overnight were working on dampening hotspots.
Last night Fire and Emergency New Zealand said crews were fighting the fires in the Coopers Knob area above Summit Rd.
A spokesperson said the fires were "substantial" but there was no accurate size of them yet. It was not known whether any official evacuations were taking place.
Twitter users reported the fire was above Governors Bay on the Tai Tapu side of the Port Hills.
Meanwhile, MetService reports there are light winds in the Christchurch area of around 13km/h easterlies with gusts reaching 17km/h.
The current temperature is 16C with temperatures set to reach 27C on Thursday, with fine weather expected before rain developing at night.
One person who texted Marcus Lush on NewsTalk ZB said they could see the fire and emergency services surrounding it from Christchurch Airport.
Others must be deterred from using physical attacks as a form of protest, the judge said.
