Fire crews have put out a large gorse fire that threatened a pine plantation on the outskirts of Dunedin.
More than 20 fire officers and five helicopters battled the blaze on a farm between Allanton and Mosgiel, acting Mosgiel station officer Martin Jansen said.
The fire service was called to the blaze just after 11am and had the fire under control by about 3.30pm, Mr Jansen said.
Windy conditions meant the fire could have easily spread to the surrounding area which contained a pine plantation, he said.
Rural fire officers would remain on the scene to check for hot spots.
Between 30 and 50 acres of gorse was burnt in the fire.
