Firefighters are at the scene of a significant house fire in Turangi which they have been battling since 3.50pm today.
One person has been treated for smoke inhalation by St John Ambulance but police were also called to the scene because of ammunition in the house.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay said the ammunition had potential to explode but reports from the scene were that it had been destroyed by the flames.
Ms Ramsay said four appliances from Turangi and Taupo as well as a tanker attended the fire which was now under control.
She said the fire had caused major damage to the house.
