Five fire crews are fighting a blaze in a paddock near Lake Hood in Ashburton.
Southern communications shift manager Rewai Grace says it is a large paddock and the fire is just kicking off so it is hard to tell how big it could get at this stage.
Fire crews have been called to two other minor blazes today which are now under control.
In Christchurch a group of trees caught alight when touched by power lines, and an offal pit on a farm was ablaze for a short while.
Fire teams remain alert and on standby for more fires as warm, dry northwesterly winds hit the region.
