A Marlborough forest fire that forced families to flee their homes is now under control, the Fire Service says.
A Department of Conservation spokesperson said the Canvastown fire had been contained but firefighters would remain on standby.
Department of Conservation ranger Carol Knight said the residents of a dozen houses that had been evacuated overnight were allowed back home at 11am today.
The fire, which covered between 20 to 30 hectares of forest, still gave off smoke from its lingering hot spots, Ms Knight said.
It was expected an investigation into the fire's cause would start tomorrow.
Four firefighting helicopters, three bulldozers and several fire crews battled through a mass of smoke this morning.
Emergency services were called to the fire in a pine plantation on State Highway 6 about 10.30pm last night. More than 30 residents were evacuated.
Fire crews arrived to find the blaze was bigger than first reported, said Fire Service assistant area manager for Tasman/Marlborough Tim Bennion this morning.
"Very little firefighting" was done overnight and helicopters would be sent up at first light to see the extent of the fire, he said.
Bulldozers were brought in to create fire breaks.
None of the evacuated houses had been reached by the fire, Mr Bennion said.
More than 30 urban and rural firefighters were at the scene last night.
