There was a happy ending for one mama duck spotted pacing in distress along a West Auckland road after her gaggle of babies fell into a drain this afternoon.
The Fire Service was called to the rescue at 4pm, and found five ducklings down the drain on Stottholm Road in Titirangi.
Volunteer firefighter Philip Taylor said it wasn't uncommon to have to come to the rescue of the baby ducks, but it was the "first for a little while".
He said the truck full of five firefighters helped to lift up the drain grate and just "pulled them out".
Taylor said all were "rescued successfully" to the relief of the distressed mamma in a mere fifteen minutes.
"She was across the road quite agitated," he said. "But she quickly whipped them into line and they wandered off down the verge.
