Firefighters are still battling a fire in a forestry block near Carterton.
A Times-Age reporter at the scene of the fire said a large area was smouldering and producing large amounts of smoke.
Firefighters said much of the fire would be left to burn itself out, as it would take too long to put out.
Crews were called to the Carterton District Council-owned at Dalefield block yesterday afternoon, where the fire had ignited due to dry conditions and high winds.
But they were forced to retreat by early evening as the winds made fire-fighting conditions too dangerous. Crews were back at the scene this morning.
