The Palmerston North City Council building may be without power for several days, following a fire this morning.
A switchboard in the basement caught fire, and the fire soon spread to a transformer.
Electrical cables were destroyed, meaning the Council cannot use generators as a back up.
They have asked that residents do not call the Council, because the phone lines are out of action.
