Fire crews in Christchurch were battling a blaze at an abandoned "red zone" house.
The house, in Bexley St, Bexley, was reported on fire at 11.40pm, said Fire Service spokesman Rewai Karetai.
He said three crews were attending the blaze in the Eastern suburb, badly affected by the Canterbury earthquakes.
It appeared the house, that was red stickered and unoccupied, had been "torched," he said.
