A large blaze at McCain Foods' potato stores in Timaru is now under control.
Emergency services were called to the stores on Meadows Road in suburban Washdyke at 8.48am.
Nine fire appliances were on scene at the height of the blaze but four had since left, fire southern communications shift manager Jan Wills said.
The fire broke out in the internal lining of an empty potato store block, she said.
The block was one of four in the complex but it was not clear if the others were also at risk.
Witnesses reported flames reached up to 20m high.
