Two women who died as a result of a crash in Fiordland on Friday may have been killed by a falling tree.
The fire service were called to the scene 80 kilometres from Te Anau, along the Te Anau-Milford highway, around 5.15pm.
A spokesman says reports from the scene were that a tree had fallen on the car and crushed it.
He says he can't confirm whether the tree fell as a result of impact, or if it was the crash or the falling tree that killed one person, and left the other critical.
The fire service used extraction gear to get the woman in critical condition out of the vehicle, but she later died in hospital.
