They've shared stages around the world but this was the first time - in the words of the Crowded House album title - they've ever been "together alone".
The Auckland Museum played host to Neil Finn and son Liam's first ever father-and-son show, as part of its Late series which combine cultural discussions with music by local stars.
Before a sold-out crowd of 500, the Finns delivered stripped-down versions of some of their songs, the piano-and-guitar arrangements suiting the cavernous reverb of the three-storey atrium in the institution's Grand Foyer.
The set list also included a cover, with Liam taking lead on Neil Young's Old Man, with the opening line "Old man take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you were" - the song embracing three generations with father and granddad Richard Finn in the audience.
Elsewhere, the "domain" of the Melbourne-inspired Four Seasons in One Day nicely relocated itself to the one surrounding the museum, and as a fitting end to the night in this venue, the pair revived Split Enz hit History Never Repeats.
The next Late show at the museum is May 7 and features Nathan Haines as well as a panel discussion entitled "I am what I own."
