KEY POINTS:
Four finalists have been announced for New Zealand's most prestigious contemporary art award, the $50,000 Walters Prize.
Finalists Edith Amituanai, Lisa Reihana, John Reynolds and Peter Robinson each receive $5000.
The winner will receive $50,000, an all expenses paid trip to New York, and have their work displayed at Saatchi & Saatchi's world headquarters.
The prize, named after artist Gordon Walters, was established in 2002 to reward "outstanding contributions to contemporary art in New Zealand", a spokesman for the Auckland Art Gallery said.
The winner will be announced in late October.
Previous winners include Francis Upritchard and Yvonne Todd.
