Filmed Dunedin driver surrenders his licence

A Dunedin motorist has surrendered his driver's licence to police after his car was filmed repeatedly crossing the centre line on Warrender St in Dunedin on Sunday.

A police spokesman confirmed the man, in his 80s, had surrendered his licence.

They were unable to confirm last night if charges were being considered.

A friend of the filmed man's family contacted the Otago Daily Times to say the man, who they said had health issues, had been spoken to by police and had surrendered his licence.

The man's family was fully involved and wished to maintain privacy now the situation had been resolved, the friend, who asked not to be named, said.

"The family would deeply appreciate if this could be made public so that the people who worry that nothing has been done will have their minds set at rest.

"They do not wish to comment further."

In a video shot by Dunedin man Richard Mountain and shared widely online, the man's white Peugeot was seen narrowly avoiding collisions with three cars as he travelled from Maori Hill towards North Dunedin.
