The deep magnitude 7.3 magnitude earthquake which struck off the Fiji Islands this morning was recorded on quake drums around New Zealand, GNS Science says.
The United States Geological Survey said the quake was centred 120km southwest of Ndoi Island, and 425km west of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, at a depth of 626km.
Despite the epicentre being 1788km from Auckland, GNS Science said the jolt was recorded by all of New Zealand's quake drums around the country.
The quake had been initially measured as a 7.2 at a depth 593km, but has since been upgraded in magnitude and judged to have been deeper than first thought.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected.
