Fiji police yet to decide on Brooke's fate

Fijian police have interviewed former All Black Robin Brooke but say they are no closer to deciding whether to press charges for his alleged sexual harassment of a teenager.

Sergeant Suliano Tevita said Brooke was interviewed last Thursday, six days after he was alleged to have touched an Auckland girl's backside while on holiday near Nadi.

Mr Tevita said police were speaking to a number of people, including staff and security at the Hilton Denarau where the incident occurred.

Brooke came home from holiday on Saturday but has not returned Herald calls. There were no signs of life at his Pyes Pa, Tauranga, home yesterday.

A 15-year-old from Ponsonby has accused him of twice grabbing her buttocks as she was resting by the pool. Her 17-year-old friend Jordan Whittaker has made an assault complaint to Fiji police, claiming that when he went to her aid, Brooke swore at him, grabbed him by the throat and threw him on to a deckchair.

The girl's mother said the family did not want Brooke to receive a criminal conviction but were seeking a sincere apology.

She was reluctant to comment further while the case was being investigated.

The girl was staying with a schoolfriend whose father, Philip Buckleton, owns Beachside Resort at Nadi.

Mr Buckleton said security staff at the Hilton had not gone to her aid when told what was happening because in Fiji, All Blacks "are treated like gods".

He said Brooke had tried to contact the girl on New Year's Day but she was too angry to meet him.

Brooke and his wife, Hayley, met Jordan Whittaker several days after the alleged incident. The youth told the Herald on Sunday that Brooke had appeared nervous and was apologetic.

Brooke played 69 test matches for the All Blacks in the 1990s. He was an Auckland representative for 14 years and captained the Blues Super 12 side. He retired in 2001.
