Students at Lincoln University in Christchurch have been revealed as the worst cheats in the country.
Lincoln recorded the most cheating offences among the eight universities nationwide, with 1.76 cases for every 100 students, figures released to The Press under the Official Information Act showed.
Sixty-one per cent of the offences were by international students.
Lincoln vice-chancellor Roger Field said the university was increasingly vigilant about educating foreign students on the expected standards.
In the three years to 2009, Lincoln's international students were responsible for an average of 74 per cent of cheating offences, compared with 22 per cent at Auckland's AUT University and 28 per cent at Otago University.
Figures showed Waikato University had the second-largest number of cheats last year, with 0.97 cases for every 100 students. Victoria University of Wellington came in third place, with 0.38, and AUT with 0.29.
Canterbury University had 0.12 offences for every 100 students, while Otago had 0.17.
Massey and Auckland's figures were incomplete as both universities only recorded serious, deliberate offences.
