Manawatu's skies could soon be buzzing with fighter planes as Singapore Air Force fighter pilots learn their trade at the air force base in Ohakea.
Ohakea is being tipped as the probable venue for training of the pilots by multinational defence contractor Lockheed Martin, the Manawatu Standard reported.
Manawatu Mayor Ian McKelvie said Singapore pilots training at the base, near Bulls, would be exciting for the region. He had not received official communication about the deal.
"I'm sure they'll let us know when the news is out."
Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee said Lockheed Martin would have to win the contract before any training began in New Zealand.
"It's all very tentative ... If it comes to New Zealand, Ohakea is the place."
A final decision would likely be made in the first quarter of this year.
