Armed police were deployed to meet a fishing boat in Tauranga Harbour following a serious fight on the vessel early this morning.
Area tactical response manager, Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair, said police received a report around 3.30am about a serious fight on a fishing vessel.
"As a result of the fight, the captain of the ship was transferred to a second fishing vessel, while another crew member brought the first vessel back to the Port of Tauranga," he said.
"Communications between police and the fishing vessel was difficult due to the location."
Mr Wright-St Clair said police are "not able to confirm many of the details around the incident", but said based on the information received, deploying armed police staff to meet the vessel was warranted.
