Fifteen fire trucks are currently battling flames at a two storey house in the Coromandel.
The Fire Service were called to a house fire on Wigmore Crescent in Hahei around 9.15pm.
A Fire Service spokesman said flames in the second storey of the house were now under control, but the lower storey was still under an "external attack".
He said the first priority for crews arriving at the scene was protecting homes either side of the house.
Firefighters had managed to stop the fire from spreading to the neighbours, the spokesman said, but there was still going to be a lot of damage to the house.
