Coastguard New Zealand says people appear to be staying out of trouble, with the number of callouts this summer matching last year despite far more people taking to the water. "It's been one of the busiest summers I've seen in years, but calls for help have remained steady," said eastern region operations manager Baz Kirk. This month there has been only one boating-related death compared with six last January.
