The end is in sight for ferry services between Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula.
Operator 360 Discovery has announced sailings will cease on April 14.
The company's marketing manager Lianne Clarke says the company has persevered with the loss-making service for several years as it provided a valuable form of public transport into the Coromandel District.
She says the company has lobbied for funding with central government and local authorities on the grounds that every person carried on the ferry represents one less vehicle on a stretch of highway already under considerable congestion pressures. However, she says funding was not forthcoming.
"There comes a point when you have to make a decision rather than spending money to try and get people to listen to you."
Ms Clark says the company has had some fantastic support, but it has not been enough to keep the service afloat.
360 Discovery still operates services to Tiritiri Matangi Island, sails harbour cruises, trips to Motuihe Island, private charters and commuter services between Gulf Harbour and Auckland City.
