Ferrari's announcement of the 575M Maranello replacement almost knocked its FXX GT off the headlines. The 599GTB will not be unveiled until February 28 at the Geneva Motor Show, when it replaces the Maranello, launched in 1996.
The 599GTB will be the most powerful V12-engined production car ever, according to Ferrari vice president Amedeo Felisa, speaking at the Detroit Motor Show.
It will use a mid-front-mounted engine, an Enzo-derived, 6.0-litre V12 that can produce 462kW at 7600rpm.
Combine that with a lightweight thanks to extensive use of aluminium in the Pininfarina-designed body and chassis, and you get a brain-wrenching 0.526kW to move each kilogram.
Doesn't sound like much? It beats the world's fastest production car, Bugatti's Veyron, with 0.395kW per kg. Only cutting-edge sports bikes do better.
Meanwhile, the FXX made its first American visit since its December world debut.
Just 29 cars have been built, with the vehicle designed to be used exclusively on the track as part of an ongoing research and development programme using test drivers.
It will not be run on road or raced, but will provide a framework for future models.
The car has a 6262cc V12 engine that develops more than 596kW at 8500rpm, for a power-to-weight ratio of 0.93kW per kilogram.
High-tech components include a Formula One-derived gearbox that swaps cogs in fewer than 100 milliseconds, and an aerodynamic design that offers 40 per cent more downforce than the Enzo.
Bridgestone developed special tyres, and Brembo constructed special brakes. A tailor-made telemetry system monitors the car in real time. Super-rich punters must be prepared to pay 1.5 million euros ($2.6 million) and will be vetted by a special committee, but it'll be worth it.
The purchase includes participation in 14 Ferrari-organised track events at international circuits, plus independent private sessions.
Buyers will also get an advanced driving course at Fiorano, after their custom-fitted seat and pedals have been moulded.
