Another year and new decade has begun for Featherston Golf Club.
The club's first big tournament for the year was played on January 2-4 featuring club members and visitors from Trentham, Shandon, Te Marua, Levin, Carterton, Masterton, Boulcott's Farm, Judgeford, Wainuiomata and Mahunga.
This event had about 90 players for the three days of sun and fun, some beautiful prizes for the winners and it was great to see people out enjoying themselves.
The winners for the Featherston Golf Classic three-day event were:
Senior men's best Gross: Tony Russo 221; second Owen Lloyd 222; third Mike Wren 230.
Intermediate men's best Gross: Alex Walters 249; second Daniel Dexter 250; third Frank Martin 256.
Junior men's best Gross: Rick Mikara 256; second Charlie Fairbrother 268; third Ray Weighell 274.
Women's division 1 best Gross: Alanah Braybrook 252; second Connie Broker 266; third Sharon Harper 270.
Women's division 2 best Gross: Hoki Awatere 276; second Susan Slaughter 291; third Carole Butland 296.
Senior men's best Nett: Peter Wihare 195; second Brian Russo 206; third Ryan Braybrook 212.
Intermediate men's best Nett: Alistair Forrest 199; second Brent Leader 207; third Mark Finlay 210.
Junior men's best Nett: George Criddle 197; second Brian Rudman 205; third Terry Smith 208.
Women's division 1 best Nett: Shirley Poutu 213; second Sally Fairbrother 219; third Carol Antipas 230.
Women's division 2 best Nett: Bev Todd 201; second Karen Martin 212; third Julie Channer 232.
Over the three days 20 players scored twos.
The club also held a nearest-to-the-pin competition on the All Teed Up hole on the 9th and winners were Tony Russo, Shinji Manabe, Terry Smith and Sharon Harper.
Longest drive winners were John Warner, Chooky Atkins, Ray Weighell, Alanah Braybrook and Bev Todd.
The event was excellent and successful, thanks to all the people who helped make it happen and to sponsors Greytown Butchery, Scotty's Meats, Adamson Garage, A J Renovations and the Empire Hotel.
Last Sunday was the first round for the Wymss Cup. Standings in the medal round were: first Bill O'Brien 63; second Charlie Preistley 64; third Bob Schofield 65; fourth Patrick Melaugh 68.
Women's winners were Sharon Harper and Sally Fairbrother.
Twos were the order of the day and Patrick Melaugh, George Criddle and Ray Weighell came out smiling.
DATES TO REMEMBER
The most important event of the junior calendar is on Wednesday, January 26, when the Cromwell Group Featherston Junior Open will be held. Everyone is invited watch juniors from all over Wairarapa and from over the hill play some brilliant golf.
On January 23 will be Cossie Club versus RSA. Also, this Sunday is the second round of the Wymss Cup.
