The summer Wymss Cup was a victory for the juniors in 2006. While long time member and veteran Bob Harwood was the winner last year, diminutive Daniel Hailwood, from Upper Hutt, captured the Cup on Sunday 15 January with a two round net medal total of 126 (60, 66).
Daniel has been having considerable success with a new driver that seems to be almost as tall as he is. The runner up was teenager and seasoned junior Featherston player Reece Lett on 128 (60, 68).
The windy conditions that have plagued January golf continued on Sunday, making the net scores somewhat higher than last week. No doubt lower handicaps as a result of good scores in the recent past were starting to catch up with some players. Winners of the Sunday competition were Charlie Priestley and Duke Molnar with net 65s. On 66 were Daniel Hailwood, Pat Melaugh, Jason Burt, Darron Fisher and Terry Smith. On 67 were Mark Anderson, Chris Slaughter and Steve Reid. The women's net was won by Barbara Thompson with 70 followed by Susan Roche on 75. There were only two twos scored during the competition: Julie Dondertman and Charlie Priestley. The All Teed Up Nearest the Pin on number 9 was won by Darron Fisher. Next Sunday 22 January is the annual Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club versus Upper Hutt RSA, with Featherston Players also invited.
Another date to put in the diary is the Festival of Golf on Saturday 11 February. This Wairarapa wide promotion is designed to encourage new people to golf and to rekindle interest in golf for those who might have given the game away for a few years. Special offers on the day include green fees at $10 for all visitors, individual memberships for $350, and couple memberships for $550, if paid for on the day. spread the word.
