Highlights of the second annual Featherston Classic Trusthouse 54 hole tournament 2 ? 4 January 2006 included a 71, in tough conditions, by guest player, Masterton professional Jamie McIsaac, and an unusual eagle 2 by Alf Sio on the par 4 1st, on the third day. A sand wedge downwind found the mark.
There were 84 entries for the whole tournament, about the same as in 2005.
Conditions could not have been more testing. The strong winds which buffeted New Zealand were also felt in Featherston.
The first day was very windy for the early starters, but later starters had better conditions.
The second day was the best of the three, though the wind got to gale force in the later afternoon. On the third day, it was the trifecta of strong winds, but overall more pleasant than the earlier two days.
Later starters got caught in a heavy downpour for about 15 mins. These conditions meant that there were more than the usual number of balls swept into the dairy farm alongside the 5th hole.
Great amusement was caused by the sight of Terri Smallbone and Maelene Criddle holding onto one another, and the fence line, along the 5th, about midday on the first day, to prevent themselves being blown into Lake Wairarapa, or further south. Shanks from those who should know better were observed from the clubhouse.
The good results from a group of junior players, in all the grades, promises a strong Junior Pennants competition in the Wairarapa during 2006.
The Featherston Golf Club refunded the entry fees for Geoff and Phil Tuoro, from the Maasterton Golf Club, who are to play in the National Under-19 tournament at Manukorihi, New Plymouth later in January. A whip around the clubhouse raised a further $280 to assist them with their expenses.
