East Coast flanker Joe Feast is a doubtful starter for Wairarapa-Bush in their Heartland championship rugby match with Buller at Memorial Park, Masterton on Saturday.
Feast suffered a blow to the chest during his team's 27-19 win over South Canterbury last weekend and was unable to complete Tuesday night's training session as a consequence.
His injury virtually guarantees that Pioneer's Mike Wilson will move from the reserves to the starting line-up for Saturday with Feast taking his place on the bench. And if he is not considered fit enough to take his place there either Nathan Rolls could be a surprise recall to the squad.
Rolls was expected to be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a hand injury in the last of the non-championship games against Wellington B but he has had the cast removed and was back in full training mode on Tuesday.
His return is welcome news for Wairarapa-Bush as not only he is one of their most dangerous attackers with ball in hand but he provides an extra lineout option.
Doubt still exists too over the likelihood of Nathan Couch being fit enough to start at second-five in Saturday's match. At the time these notes were penned the betting was Mike Shaw would start there as he did against South Canterbury and that if Couch passed a fitness test he would begin proceedings on the reserves bench. On that basis then a likely starting line-up for the Buller match is:Peato Lafaele, Junior Togia, Jordan Watene, Mike Shaw, Charlie Walker-Blair, Patrick Rimene, Mike Hollis, Mike Spence, Jared Hawkins, Tomasi Kedrabuka, James Measor, Mike Wilson; Kurt Simmonds, Joe Harwood, Dylan Higgison.
Three curtain-raiser matches will be played at Memorial Park on Saturday, the Wairarapa-Bush under-16s kicking things off followed by the Wairarapa-Bush Bs and the Wairarapa-Bush under-20s.
The draw is:
Wairarapa-Bush v Buller, Memorial Park No.1 at 2.30pm (G.Newman North Harbour; A.Stringer, C.Jefferies, G.Reisima and G.Hall); Wairarapa-Bush B v Wanganui, Memorial Park No.1 at 12.55pm (R.Kelly Taranaki; C.Jefferies, G.Reisima and K.Lochhead); Wairarapa-Bush under-20 v Horowhenua-Kapiti, Memorial Park No.2 at 1pm (A.Stringer; G Hall, S O'Gorman and A.Payne); Wairarapa-Bush under-16 v Manawatu, Memorial Park No.1 at 11.30am (S O'Gorman; A.Payne and K.Lochhead)
