KEY POINTS:
Police are concerned that a child who fell from a moving car yesterday may be in need of medical treatment.
Sergeant Jeff Lyver said a silver or grey station wagon was turning from Bath Street into Parker Avenue in central Levin around 2pm when the rear passenger door swung open and the child fell out.
Mr Lyver said the occupants of the car stopped, scooped up the child, and left before police or ambulance staff arrived.
The driver of the car, a male Caucasian, and his passenger a Maori woman - both in their late 50s to early 60s - told bystanders they were the child's grandparents and had recently moved to Levin, Mr Lyver said.
The child was described as 18 months to two-years-old with possible head injuries.
"Police have fears for the child's wellbeing and urge any members of the public who have not already spoken to police to come forward," he said.
