Detectives searching for kidnapped six-year-old Jayden Headley were last night fearful for the Hamilton schoolboy's safety.
Jayden was abducted from the Garden Place Hamilton Central Library more than a week ago. A 35-year-old woman appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday charged with his kidnapping. Her bail conditions are to surrender her passport and report to police on a regular basis.
The boy's father, Christopher Jones, told the Herald on Sunday that he had employed a team of searchers to assist the 12 detectives looking for his son. "It is a very emotional strain on the family, we are concerned for Jayden and just really want him home," he said.
Police allege that Jayden is on the run with 68-year-old Dick Headley, who is the boy's grandfather. Waikato detectives have received two phone calls, made by Dick Headley from public phones, but last night they refused to comment on speculation that the boy was part of a kidnap situation.
Jones said his son would be confused and worried. "What level of care can someone on the run provide a six-year-old? Jayden should not have to endure this," he said.
Dick Headley, is believed to be travelling in a silver 1997 VS Holden Commodore, registration WM3737.
Police have sent a strong message warning family members and friends who know of Jayden's whereabouts that they will face criminal charges if they are found to have helped in the kidnapping.
Anyone with information about Jayden should contact the Hamilton police, ph (07) 858 6200.
