KEY POINTS:
Two children are missing after an alleged domestic "altercation" in Whangarei last night.
Police are looking for 54 year-old James Toby who left Onerahi at about 10.30pm, taking his infant children.
Mr Toby - the father of an 18 month-old and three year-old is alleged to have been involved in what police describe as an "altercation" with the children's mother.
Detective Kelly Penney said the children have not been heard from since.
"My concern is they haven't been seen or heard from since and I want to satisfy myself and the inquiry that their welfare is being catered for," he said.
Police are at the scene this morning, talking to family and witnesses.
"I haven't been in a position to speculate on likely charges," Detective Penney said.
Mr Toby, who police describe as Maori and say should not be approached, left the address in a white Nissan Pulsar hatchback with the registration YW3322.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Penney on 09 430 4500.
