KEY POINTS:
The trial of a woman charged with assaulting her son was aborted by a judge today.
The trial - which began on Wednesday before Judge Graham Noble and a jury of eight women and four men - was halted when Judge Noble found there was a real risk of a miscarriage of justice.
Judge Noble, sitting at Timaru District Court, suppressed his reasons for aborting the trial.
He ordered a new trial and remanded the 42-year-old woman from Mid Canterbury on bail to a pre-trial hearing on Monday.
The woman's husband, who pleaded guilty to assaulting the boy with intent to injure him and two charges of assault, has been remanded for sentence on September 5.
Judge Noble ordered pre-sentence and victim impact reports and remanded the man on continued bail.
