A man who claimed it was his right as a Christian to hit his son will not face trial.
Rowan James Flynn, 53, of Christchurch, was due to stand trial on five charges of assaulting his son and one charge of assaulting a female.
Nelson District Court Judge Tony Zohrab discharged Flynn after the Crown offered no evidence.
Two charges of leaving a child under 14 without reasonable supervision were also withdrawn.
