KEY POINTS:
A man has appeared in court accused of driving a car which collided with a train, killing his four year old son and injuring three of his daughters.
The 38 year-old is charged with three counts of dangerous driving causing injury and one count of dangerous driving causing death.
The accident happened on train tracks near Pukekohe last Tuesday.
The four year-old boy survived the initial crash but later died in Starship Hospital.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported one of the daughters, aged 12, to hospital with serious injuries. Two other girls, aged two and six, were taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
At the time of the accident, witnesses told the Herald that the barrier arms moved down and the lights were flashing.
Senior Sergeant Rob Arnold said police are appealing for people who saw a silver Mitsubishi travelling on State Highway 22 between Drury and Paerata shortly before the accident. He said witnesses can call police on 237 1708.
