A woman who died when she was hit by a train today had been the subject of a police pursuit earlier this morning.
Emergency services were at the scene on the side of State Highway 1 south of Ashburton, where the woman's body was concealed by a tarpaulin on the grass verge.
The woman's car, which was burnt out, was on the side of the tracks.
It is understood the woman, who has not been identified, was not in the car at the time of the collision and the car was not hit by the train. It was not clear what caused it to catch fire.
Police were still trying to piece together what happened in the lead-up to the death but confirmed they had been alerted to the woman and her vehicle before it occurred.
