The woman who died in a quad bike accident last night on d'Urville Island, in the Marlborough Sounds, has been named as 45-year-old Michelle Lee Goodgame.
Ms Goodgame was killed and her seven-year-old daughter was seriously injured in the accident at Whareatea Bay, on the eastern side of the island, about 7pm.
The accident happened while the quad bike was being used to transport equipment to a bach from the beach, up a gravel track, a spokesman for the Summit Rescue Helicopter said.
The bike appeared to have left the track about 30 metres from the beach and rolled down a steep ravine and come to rest about 8 metres below, in a rocky stream.
Ms Goodgame died at the scene from her injuries.
Her body was removed from the island at 11.30pm.
The rescue helicopter flew three police officers and an advanced paramedic in to the remote location before flying the girl to Nelson Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
